The Village

The village of La Charité-sur-Loire is just two hours beyond the hustle and bustle of Paris; nestled on the banks of the Loire river on the Western edge of Burgundy. A village steeped in rich history and enveloped in culture...La Charité will nourish your mind and your soul. This centuries old Medieval town has withstood many battles throughout history, including the Wars of Religion and the Hundred Years War, where in 1439 Joan of Arc besieged this town. From the middle ages to the present day; people have come and gone leaving their mark...making La Charité what it is today. La Charité is a town of about 6,000 inhabitants “les Charitois.” It is on the major train route from Paris with six direct trains daily. (2hrs). It is 20 min. from the city of Nevers(30,000pop.) and 45 min from the city of Bourges(65,000 pop). The wine villages are practically on your doorstep, as close as a 10 min. drive.

There are at least seven boulangeries and pastry shops, fifteen or more restaurants and eight bars to serve you. Three butchers, deli’s and other specialty cheese, chocolate and wine shops along with a weekly year-round outdoor market. This is a designated “book town” and there is a book fair every third week-end from April- Oct. It is also an Art and Music town and it plays host to many different events throughout the year, Piano, Jazz and Blues to name a few. Many of the concerts are free and open-air, others are performed in the Cathedral or other venues in town. Anytime you venture out in this village, a feast of culinary and visual arts await. Culture and friendly locals permeate this town, you will be warmly welcomed and treated kindly....however...please remember to observe the local customs and greetings...always say Bonjour!
